Costume Info
Since we are a performance studio we order costumes toward the beginning of each year for the students to wear in both performances. Costumes are ordered from 5-6 major companies at the end of October and usually arrive in January. We measure all students for costumes in the beginning of October. (Attendance is very important)
Students must purchase 1 costume for each class, except Tap & Jazz Combo Classes which have 2 costumes each. In order to break up the costs of the costumes, we require a Costume Deposit of $50.00 per costume be made during the month of October. That money goes to the purchase of the students costumes. The remaining balance is not due until January. However, some costume arrive early, if your students costume arrives ahead of schedule they may take it home with them as long as the balance is paid. Costumes are not released until the balances are paid.
After Thanksgiving Break, Costume Books, labeled by Instructor, are set out on the front desk. This book contains photos of the costumes, with the total amount, balances due and required tights and shoes. Students should already have the appropriate shoes, but performance tights often have to be ordered. When the costumes arrive, and they usually arrive in shifts by class, the top of the page will be marked arrived. You can check that your balance is paid at the front desk. Students with a zero balance take their costumes home that day!
Taking care of your costume is very important. Because it takes so long for the companies to make and ship them to us, if you lose or damage your costume we cannot guarantee that we will be able to get you another one. Students are required to wear the correct and full costume in order to perform. Please take care not to lose any pieces!! (hair pieces, gloves, sashes etc)
When costumes arrive you must keep in mind that while we measure for sizing purposes the costumes are not made to order, which means that sometimes alterations are necessary. The first thing you need to do when you receive your costume is take it home and try it on. The most common alteration needed is hemming the pants. All pants tend to come long. If you need help finding someone who can do alterations, please contact the front desk. If the sizing is so off that it seems as though alterations won’t help, please see Miss Heather.
After each performance and picture day I recommend hanging your costume, tights and all accessories in a garment bag in the closet. This way it stays neat and put together until the next time you wear it! If your costume comes out of the bag very wrinkled, hang it in the bathroom during a few showers, the steam will usually soften it. Please do not leave it in the bag until the day we perform!!
